We were not disappointed! My colleague had a Racks burger which he thoroughly enjoyed commenting ‘a perfect balance struck between the meaty burger, fries, chutney and condiments’. As for the cheesecake he consumed, one word only described his thoughts ‘scrumptious’. For myself I enjoyed the Sirloin Steak salad. Cooked to my specification, it went well with the balsamic vinegar and delicious salad. Very well presented and pleasing to the eye. For dessert I insisted on having Chocolate Pudding with warm chocolate sauce and ice cream. The portion was extremely generous and I can honestly say when I left the table there definitely wasn’t room for anymore food! Very attentive and friendly staff and nothing was too much trouble for them. All in a pleasant setting and décor too!
Verdict: All in all I would definitely visit Racks again and would consider having a works Christmas outing there.

Delicious and well presented food, relaxing ambience and chatty staff. We ate in the bar area at the front of the restaurant, but there is a large upstairs restaurant area (look out for the belly dancers) and an outside area too.
Verdict: we had lunch and will definately be going back for an evening meal soon.

THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS and everything else is well done. They have a great chef and the menu is varied but still includes some affordable dishes for those on tighter budgets plus traditional dishes such as home made soup and steak & stout pies if you're not interested in the exquisite Thai fish cakes. I bet that every dish is as tasty as the ones we had.
Verdict: Definitely worth the 30 minute drive out of Bristol just for the food, let alone if combined with a visit to the Cheddar Gorge area.
Beefeater - There are several Beefeater pubs in Bristol, look at their site for details.
The Brassmill - Avonmill Lane, Bristol BS31 2UG - 0117 986 7280|
Plenty of people were eating here on a Wednesday night which is always a good sign - most of them locals too. Good prices, plenty too eat and the wine is served by the bucket.
Verdict: if passing and hungry would definately pop in.
Subway - 15 Clare Street, Bristol BA1 1XH - 0117 930 0455|
We reviewed this restaurant at the end of May 2003 and had a lovely lunch. It was fairly busy but the queue moved quickly with 3 people serving - prompt & polite service. We'd recommend the full foot long to fill you up, and the supply of serviettes was useful for the overflowing contents. Excellent range of fillings too - ours were very nice. We noted that the manager ordered a sandwich in the queue - a good sign.
Verdict: would pop in here again for a quick lunch.
