Georges
Park Street, BS1.
Tel 9276 602

A large branch of the Blackwells group which sprawls through several shops along Park Street. You want it, it's here. Georges includes a dedicated academic store with staff who are able to handle the complicated sort of enquiries that students generate. Their vast travel section has just about everything you need before heading off to exotic parts during the summer vacation. There is also a second-hand department (try here for your set text-books), and regular book-signings on Thursdays.

Greenleaf Bookshop
82 Colston Street, BS1.
Tel 9211 369

Radical bookshop stocking books on politics, lesbian and gay issues, psychology, politics and health. Very strong on feminist and environmental topics. Also the address of DS4A, a distributor of anarchist and other alternative literature. For many of these titles Greenleaf is the only stockist in Bristol. For social scientists especially it's definitely worth at least one visit as these types of texts are under stocked in the University Libraries. Full mail-order service available and look out for their bookstalls at big events. Greenleaf is a co-op.

John Wright Books
44 Triangle West, Clifton, BS8.
Tel 9250 923

The only specialist in medical, dentistry and vet books in Bristol. Conveniently close to the University, and within easy walking distance during lunch time. Popular with academics. Worth checking out, especially for first years when those course reading lists are handed out and the library shelves have been emptied.

Waterstones
Computer Centre, Tyndall Avenue, BS8.
Tel 9254 927

Although there are three branches in the city, this is by far the most convenient, located under the computing services centre and next to the main arts library. They try to stock books from all the University course reading lists but are particularly strong in the following: Medical, Politics and Philosophy, History of Art and Languages. The other branches at College Green and in the Galleries are more general and stronger on business studies. Mail order service available.

Wise Owl Bookshop
26 Upper Maudlin St.
Tel 9262 738
Typical second hand bookshop- books stacked and cluttered in every available space. Very helpful staff. Wide range of books- some university texts. If you're prepared to search hard enough it's possible to find some real gems. Well worth a visit when you've got a spare couple of hours.
